Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

The heat drying pelletizing facility owned and operated by a private entity, Metropolitan Biosolids Management LLC (MBM), at the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant experienced a fire at noon today.

Multiple fire departments responded to douse the fire, which is under control and contained. No evacuations were necessary, and no one was harmed. No other buildings are impacted. The cause is under investigation.

The pelletizer equipment heats biosolids to convert them into a product (pellets) that are distributed as a natural fertilizer. Approximately one-third of the MWRD’s biosolids are converted into EQ biosolids pellets at the heat drying pelletizing facility. The MBM private entity is also responsible for the distribution of the pellets.
